The Guardianship Manual

The Guardianship Manual was developed to serve as a guide for guardians who wish to become certified as a Registered Guardian in the state of North Carolina. It also serves as a reference for anyone who has questions or seeks information about the guardianship process in North Carolina.

This manual is about the process and implications of the legal ruling that results in the guardianship of an adult in North Carolina. The guardianship of minors is not covered in this manual since the guardianship of minors is usually brought about by circumstances entirely different from those resulting in guardianship of adults, with different agency involvement and different consequences.

The North Carolina Guardianship Association (NCGA) recognizes that many factors impact on the guardianship process, determining whether guardianship is needed or whether there are appropriate alternatives, filing a petition with the court, and carrying out the diverse roles and responsibilities that guardianship entails. During this process, many situations can arise that are not addressed in this manual. Moreover, the principles presented here may conflict with the personal philosophies of the reader or with the philosophy, policy, or rules of the agency, corporation, or organization.
